چکیده

chromate [Cr(VI)] species on surfaces of geologic materials. Time-resolved SR-FTIR spectra indicate that, in the presence of endoliths (mineral-inhabiting microorganisms), microbial reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) compounds on basaltic mineral surfaces is the key mechanism of Cr(VI) transformation. It proceeds in at least a two-step reaction with Cr(V) compounds as possible intermediate products, with the reduction of Cr(VI) increasing during the concomitant biodegradation of a dilute organic vapor (toluene). Analyses of spatially resolved SR-FTIR spectra show that the maximum reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) compounds occurs on surfaces densely populated by microorganisms. The oxidation state of Cr(III) compounds was conŽ rmed by micro-x-ray absorption Ž nestructure spectroscopy. Both the timeand space-resolvedSR-FTIR spectra show that in the absence of endoliths, Cr(VI) reduction is insigniŽ cant. With this effort, the potential use of SR-FTIR spectromicroscopy in providing mechanistic information of reduction of Cr(VI) has been demonstrated. This method can now be expanded to examine other IR-amenable microbial/chemical contaminant systems.

Photoreduction of Potassium Dichromate in Aqueous Solution using Cobalt doped ZnO Nanoparticles

Co-doped ZnO nanoparticles with different Cobalt contents were prepared by direct precipitation method. The materials were characterized by XRD, SEM and TEM techniques. The XRD results indicated that the particle size of pure ZnO and Co-doped ZnO is about 30-45nm. The toxic Cr(VI) in industrial wastewaters can be removed by a reduction from Cr(VI) to Cr(III). The reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) ...

Background and Objective: Chromium is present in two oxidation forms of Cr(III) and Cr(VI). Cr(III) is less toxic than Cr(VI). The aim of this article was to optimize an artificial neural network structure in modeling the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) by TiO2-P25 nanoparticles. Materials and Methods: In this work, an artificial neural network (ANN) for the modeling photocatalytic reductio...

Chromium diffusion and reduction in soil aggregates.

The distribution of metal contaminants such as chromium in soils can be strongly localized by transport limitations and redox gradients within soil aggregates. Measurements of Cr(VI) diffusion and reduction to Cr(III) were obtained in soil columns representing transects into soil aggregates in order to quantify influences of organic carbon (OC) and redox potentials on Cr transport distances and...

Experimental Study on the Factors Affecting Hexavalent Chromium Bioreduction by Bacillus cereus

Chromium through natural processes and human activities enters the air, soil and water. Chromium-resistant bacteria are capable of reducing toxic Cr(VI) to less toxic Cr(III). In this work, batch studies were conducted to evaluate the effect of environmental factors on the rate of Cr(VI) reduction from synthetic wastewater of metal plating industry by Bacillus cereus under aerobic conditions. T...

Hexavalent chromium reduction by chromate-resistant haloalkaliphilic Halomonas sp. M-Cr newly isolated from tannery effluent

The current study aimed to isolate and characterize a chromate-resistant bacterium from tannery effluent, able to reduce Cr(VI) aerobically at high pH and salinity. Environmental contamination by hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), presents a serious public health problem. Enrichment led to the isolation of 12 bacteria displaying different degrees of chromate reduction. Phenotypic characterization and...
